VCU Unveils Design of $32 Million Art Institute

Virginia Commonwealth University’s new Institute for Contemporary Art will have two fronts — one opening toward the busy Broad and Belvidere intersection and the other to a sculpture garden facing campus.

“The nature of this building,” he said, “is to embrace the unknown and act as a catalyst for all the directions that contemporary art might be taking.”

Today, VCU is unveiling the design for the three-story, 38,000-square-foot building, which will be built with private funds and is expected to open in 2015. Holl, whose work includes the Finnish Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, designed the project with Chris McVoy. The institute will provide a venue for art in the broadest sense of the term, said Joseph H. Seipel, dean of VCU’s School of the Arts..

“We have huge ambitions. Let’s call it audacious ambitions,” he said.

With a 240-plus-seat performance space, the institute will showcase theater, dance, film and art by nationally and internationally recognized artists.. It also will feature cross-disciplinary projects from within VCU as well as traveling exhibitions by emerging artists.

“I really do think this will be in the art history books throughout the world,” Rao said of the project. [x]

In the center of the building will be a two-story “forum,” a flexible meeting area that connects to the ground-floor performance space and opens to the sculpture garden and cafe. The noise from the intersection will be muted by the shape of building, which will shelter the sculpture garden. The sculpture garden will face Pine Street on the west side of the lot.

I think it would be cool to have it as a class of 2015 blog. But you really would need help from people in every department..

I agree with you, that’s really what I would love to do. So basically I guess I’m asking people from every department if you’re willing to volunteer to help maintain this blog next year as a class of 2015 VCUarts blog, please contact me.

I need people who are in:

Graphic Design

Crafts/Materials

Painting and Printmaking

Sculpture

Fashion Design

Art Education

Kinetic Imaging

Interior Design

Photography

who would be willing to be the admin for their department.
